Answer = Magnification power is determined by placement of the lens system, lens curvature and lens size.
What do the magnification ratings mean ?
Answer = The first number indicates the magnification power. Example : The 10 in a 10x50 pair of binoculars indicates a magnification power of 10. This translates to a viewed image 1000 yards away will appear to be only 100 yards away or 10 times larger than the naked eye. The 50 is the diameter of the front lens in millimeters.
What is the Field of View ?
Answer = Field of view is the panoramic width of what you are viewing. The greater the magnification, the more limited your field of view will be. Objects will appear larger, but your field of view will be less.
What purpose do the optical coatings serve ?
Answer = Not only do optical coatings protect the lens, optical coatings also reduce reflection and increase light transmission. Steiner and Bushnell use magnesium fluoride coatings to improve light transmission and reduce eye strain.
Is there a benefit to rubber armor on binoculars ?
Answer = The rubber armor will assist in protecting your binoculars against shock and other potential damage. The rubber coating also prevents your binoculars from sliding across the deck and allows a more secure grip in wet conditions.
