Marine Emergency Position Indicating Rescue Beacons (EPIRB) transmit a strong signal on 406.0 MHz and include a unique serial number built into each device. Signals are monitored by a combination of satellites. These satellites include both polar orbit satellites of the COSPAS / SARSAT system and geostationary satellites. These satellites are capable of retransmitting precise position information incorporated in the message transmitted by EPIRBS containing a GPS or Loran C navigator. In addition, the 406.0 EPIRB transmits a homing signal on 121.5 MHz for the purpose of guiding nearby search aircraft and vessels to the precise beacon location. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING EPIRB

• How long until somebody notices the distress signal ?

Answer = An emergency signal from a 406.0 EPIRB is usually noted within a few minutes of being transmitted

• Will the search and rescue team know exactly where we are ?

Answer = The position of the EPIRB is normally known to within a few miles. The position of an EPIRB transmitting a GPS derived position is precisely known.

• How long will the signal be broadcast ?

Answer = EPIRBS are all waterproof and will operate for a minimum of 48 hours at below freezing temperatures. At higher ambient temperatures operation will be considerably longer.

• How is an EPIRB activated in a distress situation ?

Answer = 406.0 EPIRBS are available with automatic deployment mechanisms that activate automatically if the vessel sinks without warning. Manually activated 406.0 EPIRBS are also available, these units must be activated by a member of the distressed party.

• Are 406.0 EPIRBS really only for commercial use ?

Answer = Recreational or Commercial, if your boat travels off shore beyond close in VHF radio range (approx 10 miles) or areas not served by coast guard VHF radio; it is your responsability to your crew or guests to equip your vessal with a 406.0 EPIRB.

• Do I need to register a 406.0 EPIRB ?

Answer = EPIRBS sold in the U.S. must be registered with the SARSAT beacon registration office at NOAA. For more information and to download forms, log on to http://www.sarsat.noaa.gov/ . This is a world wide registration effort, for residents of other countries be sure to register your 406.0 EPIRB appropriately.
